About Kanpur

Kanpur (/ˈkɑːnpʊər/ pronunciation ; formerly Cawnpore) is the largest city in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India. It is the administrative headquarters of Kanpur Nagar district and Kanpur division.

Kanpur has an area of over 605 km2 with an approximate population of 5.03 million inhabitants in its area. It is administratively divided into 6 zones and 110 wards with a ward population range of 19,000 to 30,000. It is the 75th largest city in the world.

The name is believed to have derived from Karnapur (meaning "town of Karna", one of the heroes of the Mahabharata). Another theory is that it came from the nearby town of Makanpur, earlier known as Khairabad, where the Sufi saint of the Madariya Sufi order, Badiuddin Zinda Shah Madar, settled.

Durgapur (/dʊərɡɑːpʊər/ or /-ɡæ-/) is a city in the Burdwan District, in the state of West Bengal, India. Alloy Steels Plant of SAIL ,Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI), a C.S.I.R. laboratory and Allied ICD Services Limited, the custodian of the only operational inland port (ICD Durgapur) in Eastern India, is situated in Durgapur as well. There are four power plants Durgapur Projects Limited (D.P.L.), Durgapur Thermal Power Station, Damodar Valley Corporation & N.S.P.C.L., a few chemical and engineering industries, some metallurgical units have come up in recent years. The National Institute of Technology, Durgapur (earlier known as Durgapur Regional Engineering College) is recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the government of India. In 2015, Durgapur got the premier institute STATE INSTITUTE OF HOTEL MANAGEMENT( SIHM ) at Fuljhore, within the city premises. Also, in 2016, Durgapur got its much awaited Circuit House.
